The AFL-CIO President Emeritus John J. Sweeney Scholarship is a special honor named after John J. The AFL-CIO President Emeritus John J. Sweeney Scholarship serves as a testament to his extraordinary legacy, inspiring future generations to continue his work and uphold the values of solidarity, equality, and dignity for all workers.

Value:

The John J. Sweeney Scholarship holds a significant value of $20,000, which is dedicated to covering the Scholar’s tuition fees for pursuing an MSc or LLM program at Ulster University.

This scholarship is made possible through the generous support of various entities, including the AFL-CIO, the American Labor community, business and civic organizations, as well as individual contributors. Their collective efforts underscore a shared commitment to advancing the educational opportunities of deserving students and honoring the legacy of John J. Sweeney.

Additionally, any remaining balance from the scholarship funds may be utilized to support the Scholar’s educational journey in various ways. This includes purchasing study materials or equipment, facilitating course-related activities, or providing assistance for living expenses and travel costs.

The John J. Sweeney Scholarship not only provides financial support but also embodies a spirit of solidarity and community, empowering Scholars to pursue their academic aspirations and make meaningful contributions to society.

Eligibility Criteria:

The John J. Sweeney Scholarship supports international students enrolled to study full-time on the following MSc or LLM programs at Ulster University:

  • MSc Peace and Conflict Studies
  • MSc Social Policy
  • LLM Human Rights Law and Transitional Justice
  • LLM Gender, Conflict and Human Rights
  • LLM Access to Justice
  • MSc Construction Management
  • MSc Management and Corporate Governance
  • MSc Manufacturing Management
  • MSc Business Development and Innovation

The Scholarship will be open to all international students who:

  • Have been offered a full-time place on one of the above MSc or LLM programs and have made a firm commitment to Ulster University during the admissions phase.
  • Are affiliated with a union in their home country; or
  • Have a familial connection to a union member in their home country (mother, father, sibling, aunt, uncle, grandparent); or
  • Can provide a reference letter from a union sponsor.

By meeting these criteria, international students can qualify for consideration for the esteemed John J. Sweeney Scholarship, supporting their academic pursuits at Ulster University

How to Apply:

To be considered for the John J. Sweeney Scholarship, candidates must follow these steps:

  1. Online Application: Complete the application process by submitting the online application form through the designated portal.
  2. Comprehensive Application: Ensure that all sections of the application form are fully completed. Additionally, attach all necessary documents and fulfill any additional requirements specified in the application guidelines.

Required Documentation:

  • Scanned Copy of Original Degree Certificate: Provide a scanned copy of your original degree certificate demonstrating a GPA of 2.8 or above. This serves as evidence of your academic achievement.
  • Reference Letter from a US Union Sponsor (if applicable): If applicable, include a reference letter from a US Union sponsor. This letter should attest to your involvement or affiliation with a US Union.
  • Personal Statement (500 – 750 words): Submit a well-crafted personal statement outlining your academic background, career aspirations, and reasons for applying for the John J. Sweeney Scholarship. Use this opportunity to convey your passion, commitment, and suitability for the scholarship.
  • Two Academic Reference Letters: Arrange for two academic reference letters to be submitted on your behalf. These letters should come from individuals who can speak to your academic abilities, character, and potential for success in your chosen field of study.
  • Scanned Copy of US Passport: Include a scanned copy of your US passport to verify your identity.
